Talking Shorts Presents outlooks Publication
outlooks is Talking Shorts’ annual print series that explores short-film culture from a position of plurality and anti-canonical revolt. outlooks was conceived as a complement to Talking Shorts’ mission of providing a platform for long-form short film criticism, rather than as a symbolic response to the (perceived) fleeting status of online criticism.
Paradoxically, outlooks serves as a supplement to the online magazine by bringing our readership snapshots and perspectives that sit on the fringes of and outside the (primarily European/anglophone) short film industry. In a field that is as much shaped by the dominance of neoliberal approaches as any other, outlooks enables us to practise a new way of looking beyond the conventional industry contexts, challenging and uncovering what is frequently overlooked and deprioritised. Thanks to the contributors, we carve new spaces—outlooks—from which one not only sees better but also actively participates in the challenges and changes short film and moving image culture are facing today.
This 124-page pilot issue of outlooks includes a variety of creative and critical writing, from essays and an imaginary film programme to a survey and correspondence pieces. It was edited by Sanne Jehoul, Savina Petkova, and Niels Putman and includes contributions by Aylin Gökmen, Theo Panagopoulos, Najrin Islam, Jason Todd, Arindam Sen, Precious Colette Kemigisha, Ati Metwaly, Ren Scateni, and Ahmad Fauzi. The publication will be presented by Savina Petkova, Niels Puttman and Sanne Jehoul.
