Internet Archaeology 9.0

Internet Killed the Music Video Star

Before the algorithms started determining what we were going to watch, there was MTV, Pink TV and the Videospotnice TV show. The nineties were the golden age of music videos, the junction of film, music, fashion, TV and digital experiments. Music videos did more than accompany songs; they shaped the visual language of the entire generation – from global MTV hits to Balkan pop and turbo-folk classics.

A partially new team’s Internet Archaeology programme returns to cult images, deciphering them as digital fossils. What can we learn from the music videos that once reigned on MTV, Pink TV and local music shows, which now live on YouTube, in memes and in the collective memory? This is not only a nostalgic recollection but also a study of a time when the internet’s future was already embedded in music video aesthetics. But we’ll make sure that it’s a fun study. We’ll ditch the chairs because you’re in for a dance of nostalgia and a grand spectacle.
