Film narration with non-human protagonists

The identification with onscreen characters is the main tool of the film narrative that captures the audience. But how do we identify with non-human characters, such as animals, nature, objects or even concepts? In order to gain the favour of the audience, filmmakers in such cases most often use anthropomorphism. It is because people deem humanoid traits familiar and as thus most deserving of empathy.
